Does treaining make a difference?

Updated: Feb 18

I've forgotten much more than I know now. I guess it's all in there somewhere, bvut the neural pathways haven't been travelled often enough. You may recognise the experience of learning with great intentions and looking back six months later to find what you learned is, at best, hazy.

We're fortunate to know a lot more about the learning process these days, but we've always known that it takes practice, repetition and a bit of a slog to really learn. It's easy to turn to on-line knowledge bases and it might work for some activites - you can cook by following a recipe step by step. But this doesn't make you a chef, or even a half decent cook. For that you need to know, to truly understand, ingredients and what happens when you bring them together and apply the right kind of heat at the right time.

I'd argue that this applies to most activities in the real world. You may be familiar with the Samaritans SHUSH acronym, but when you're talking to someone who's in crisis, it's empathy and experience that will help more than a good internet connection.
